By Our Staff Correspondent

PANAJI, SEPT. 14. Opposition to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar, appears to be gaining momentum here with all non-BJP parties deciding to put up a common candidate for the forthcoming byelection from the Poinguinim Assembly Constituency in south Goa.

The seat fell vacant after the resignation of Isidore Fernandes of the Congress. Mr. Fernandes later joined the BJP and is tipped to get the party ticket.

The non-BJP parties on Tuesday announced the candidature of Jagadish Acharya of the Congress. The Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president, Luizinho Faleiro; the president of the Nationalist Congress Party Goa unit, Wilfred D' Souza; Datta Naik of Lok Shakti; the general secretary of the United Goan Democratic Party (UGDP), Prashant Naik; and the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) general secretary, Kashinath Zalmi, were present.

The UGDP and MGP are partners in the BJP-led coalition Government. The Tourism Minister, Matanhy Saldanha, belongs to the UGDP and the Public Works Minister, Ramakrishna Dhavlikar, belongs to the MGP. The BJP has 19 members in the Legislative Assembly. Mr. Acharya expressed confidence of winning the election given the united fight by all non-BJP parties.
