THRISSUR, SEPT. 14. The women's activist, K. Ajitha, has said that it has become difficult to differentiate between Communists and activists of the Right wing parties such as the BJP or the Congress because there is not much difference in their lifestyles. Delivering the Bishop Paulose Mar Paulose Memorial lecture here today, Ms. Ajitha said that in the past, the Communists used to lead an austere life and adhered to a secular lifestyle in their social interactions. "You could make out from the very style of warm behaviour that a particular person was a Communist. Their approach is not so accessible as was in the past. That is why Communists have no problem in defecting to a communal party like the BJP these days," Ms Ajitha said.
Rights violations
She said rights violations have become so blatant and predominant in society after the onslaught of globalisation that there are no sections that have be left unharmed. In the past, the workers used to launch agitations to enhance their wages and other similar benefits. But now they are being forced to launch agitations for the very survival. Organising resistance against such violations is also becoming a difficult proposition in spite of the fact that more and more people are being marginalised by globalisation everyday. This is because society is accepting such violations as a routine issue, Ms. Ajitha said. In the name of development, projects such as Expressway are being imposed on the people to enable the multinational companies to make huge profits and to provide more comforts to the upper-strata in society, she added. The Kerala Sahithya Akademi executive committee member and SNDP Union leader, K.K. Rahulan, and the writer, V.G. Thampi, were among those who spoke on the occasion.
