CHENNAI, SEPT. 14. He has been the most consistent performer in the Amby Valley PGAI Golf Tour thus far. After comfortable win in the Hyundai-TNGF Open, a second place finish behind Shiv Kapur in the Amby Valley-MGC Open, 38-year-old Mukesh Kumar is well placed to add to his kitty the prestigious Rs. 10 lakh The Hindu Golf Open that commences at the par-72 Cosmo-TNGF course here on Wednesday. All the top professionals barring Shiv Kapur, Digvijay Singh, Amritinder Singh, defending champion Uttam Singh Mundy and Gaurav Ghei, will take part in the four-day tournament, which is one of the oldest in South India. Giving Mukesh a run for his money will be Ashok Kumar, Vijay Kumar, Amit Dube and Sandeep Syal. Addressing newspersons on Monday, S. Thyagarajan, Deputy Sports Editor, The Hindu, recalled The Hindu's association with sports such as cricket, hockey, chess, billiards and snooker for over 50 years. Nirmal Shekar, Sports Editor, The Hindu, reiterated the organisation's commitment to promoting golf. "We have a rich tradition of supporting many sports and we are delighted to be associated with the game of golf, especially since we have encouraging results in India and abroad. We will continue to support the game as we have done in the past," Nirmal Shekar said. Krishna Prasad, Regional Manager, South India, Tiger Sports Marketing, lauded The Hindu's role in promoting golf. Sampath Chari, Executive Director, Tournaments, Professional Golfers' Association of India, welcomed the gathering. S. Ramasubramanian, Associate Secretary, TNGF, also spoke.
