Dent makes second round

BEIJING, SEPT. 14. American Taylor Dent defeated Australian Peter Luczak, a qualifier ranked 139th, 6-3, 6-2, on Tuesday to reach the second round of the $500,000 China Open. The World No.28 needed only 64 minutes to overcome Luczak.

Earlier, Israel's Noam Okun beat Arvind Parmar, a qualifier, 6-3, 6-2.

In Monday's first round matches, Germany's Rainer Schuettler defeated Australian Paul Baccanello, and Finland's Jarkko Nieminen downed Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez

In qualifying, Peter Luczak of Australia defeated Prakash Amritraj of India, 6-7, 6-2, 6-2.

Gambill beaten

Defending champion Jan-Michael Gambill was beaten in straight sets on Monday by fourth-seeded Mario Ancic in the rain-interrupted first round of the Millennium International Tennis Championships.

A 20-year-old Croatian with a career record of 46-47, Ancic beat Gambill 6-4, 6-3 in the first meeting between the players.

In another first-round match, Frenchman Jerome Golmard defeated Belgian Dick Norman 7-5, 3-6, 6-4.

Kuznetsova gets bye

U.S. Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova and top-seeded Anastasia Myskina received byes into the second round of the Wismilak International tennis tournament on Monday.

Kristina Brandi of Puerto Rico beat Japan's Saori Obata 6-1, 6-2, while

Gisela Dulko of Argentina beat local teenage qualifier Ayu Fani Damayanti 6-3, 6-1 to make the second round.

Costa ousted

Third-seeded Albert Costa of Spain and No. 5 Nikolay Davydenko of Russia were eliminated in the first round of the BCR Open.

Costa, who received a wild-card entry, was routed 6-1, 6-2 by Paul-Henri Mathieu of France, and Davydenko fell to Felix Mantilla of Spain 7-6 (3), 6-0 at the Arenele Progresul BNR.
