Efforts on to start two more colleges in Hassan

By Our Staff Correspondent

HASSAN, SEPT. 14. Efforts are on to set up a pre-university science and a first grade college for women in Hassan, according to Hassan MLA, H.S. Prakash.

The two colleges are likely to start functioning from the next academic year.

Speaking to The Hindu, he said in the view of the problems faced by girls from distant villages who had come to Hassan for studies, the district in-charge and Public Works Minister, H.D. Revanna, was making efforts to set up the pre-university science and the first grade college for women.

A memorandum had been submitted to the Director of Collegiate Education, K.V. Kodandaramaiah, when he visited the city, he added.

KSRTC buses

In view of the problems faced by the girls from distant villages in the district, the timings of the Junior College had been changed and the Minister had directed the authorities of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) to change the schedule of buses plying from rural areas for the purpose.

Waste disposal

On the controversy surrounding the waste disposal plant near Bittagowdanahalli, he said precautions had been taken against environment pollution and promised that the villagers would not be affected in any way by the plant.

The villagers of Bittagowdanahalli staged a demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office on Monday demanding that waste disposal plant be shifted from their village to the Haluvagilu area. However, dubbing the protest as a politically motivate one, Mr. Prakash said the work on the Rs. 12-crore plant was almost over. A modern treatment plant had been installed for recycling water. The plant would be ready by December next, he said.

Refuting the charge that the plant would be a health hazard for the villagers, he said there was no reason for anxiety as 10 such plants were working in Bangalore city and there was no complaint from the citizens there.
