CAP for engineering courses

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM SEPT. 14. As many as 638 students were today allotted seats in the various engineering colleges, at the Centralised Allotment Process (CAP) now under way here. Students with ranks from 18201 to 22700 have been directed to report for the CAP on September 15.

Almost all the seats under different categories in the Government engineering colleges have been filled. The counselling for admission to seats in the self-financing colleges under the State Government was on at the Science and Technology Museum here. Those with ranks from 11001 to 12500 have been directed to report for counselling tomorrow.

Service tax

The Central Excise authorities of Thiruvananthapuram Division has asked all service tax assesses to collect and remit the tax at the revised rate of 10.2 per cent from September 10. An official press note said today that it consisted of the revised rate of 10 per cent and an educational cess of two per cent on the tax. At present, 58 services were covered by service tax.

Bank's gesture to teachers

The Canara Bank is observing September as `Teachers Month'. In addition to honouring outstanding teachers, the bank will also provide loans at liberal terms to teachers during the month. They could avail up to 10 months gross salary subject to a ceiling of Rs. 2 lakhs, whichever is lower, at an interest of 10.75 per cent with 60 months loan period, during the month.

`Forces trying to split party'

The RSP(B), a partner in the United Democratic Front (UDF), today alleged that certain outside forces were trying to ferment trouble by supporting certain elements to split the party. In a statement here today, the RSP(B) State secretary, A.V. Thamarakshan, deplored the move by some sections in the party to hold parallel meetings declaring support to the Labour Minister, Babu Divakaran.

LDF jathas to begin today

The regional jathas being organised by the Opposition Left Democratic Front (LDF) as part of their struggle against the `anti-people' policies of the State Government would begin on Wednesday. The LDF is taking out two jathas, one covering the coastal stretch and the other through the interior. The jatha would be inaugurated by the Leader of the Opposition, V.S. Achuthanandan, at Mananthavady tomorrow. The jatha would conclude at Nedumangad on September 27. The conclusion of the two jathas would be followed by a siege of District Collectorates and the State Secretariat by LDF activists on September 29.

Plea to Government

The head of Book Mark, Babu Kuzhimattam, who is also the secretary of the SPCS action council, has urged the Government to take immediate steps to sort out the problems in the writers' cooperative society. In a statement today, he said that the issue did not brook further delay as the employees of the society had started committing suicide.

Wage revision sought

The Retired Bank Officers' National Confederation has called upon the Government and public sector and nationalised bank managements to expedite revision of salary and service conditions of bank officers and employees. A meeting of the Confederation members here has also called for updating of pension of all retired bank employees, rectification of anomalies in the last wage revision and implementation of a unified medical reimbursement scheme in the industry.

Minister's statement welcomed

The Kerala Electricity Employees' Confederation (KEEC) has welcomed the Electricity Minister, Aryadan Mohammed's announcement that the Government's policy was to retain the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) as a single entity and not turn it into different profit centres. In a statement issued here today, the assistant general secretary of KEEC, Sajeev Janardhanan, said the proposal to turn the KSEB into three profit centres was first mooted in the Power Policy announced by the previous LDF Government in 1998.

Society registration

There will be no society registration on Wednesday, according to press note from District Registrar.

Women's

adalat

The Kerala State Women's Commission will hold an adalat on September 22. The adalat will be held at Collectorate Conference Hall. Complaints can be submitted directly to the Commission, a press note said.

CPI(M) study camp

ALAPPUZHA SEPT. 14. The CPI(M) district committee is organising a two-day study camp at the P. Krishna Pillai Memorial Hall here on September 17 and 18, the party district secretary M.A. Baby said here today. Mr. Baby will inaugurate the camp at 9.30 a.m. on September 17. The CPI(M) leader and former district secretary of the party, G. Sudhakaran, will preside. The inaugural day will begin with a lecture by K. Chandran Pillai, MP, on `Indian Revolutionary Path'. Mr. Baby and Mr. Sudhakaran will take classes on the second day.

Workshop on Pulse Polio

KOLLAM Sept. 14. A workshop is being organised by the Rotary District zones 9, 10 and 11 here on September 26 for the Rotarians for the successful conduct of the National Immunisation Days, on October 10 and November 11. The workshop to be held at Red Cross Hall will be inaugurated by the District Medical Officer, K. Raghavan. The Pulse Polio Programme convener for the State, Abraham Jose, will speak and the member of the National Polio Plus Committee, K.P. Kamaluddin, will deliver the keynote address.

Silver Jubilee

KOTTAYAM Sept. 14. The Silver Jubilee celebrations of the Thomas Mar Athanasius Memorial (TMAM) Research and Orientation Centre at Manganam will be inaugurated by Philipose Mar Chrysostum Marthoma Metropolitan on Wednesday. Bishop Isaac Mar Philexenios will preside. A series of seminars on topical issues have also been scheduled as part of the celebrations. The TMAM centre is one of the recognised research centres of Mahatma Gandhi University on Social Science and Philosophy.

Workshop

The Department of ENT at Government Medical College here is organising a daylong state-level workshop dedicated to the memory of Dr C N Haridass, on September 19. The highlight of the workshop, being held as part of a continuing education programme, will be the C N Haridass Memorial Lecture by Mohan Kameswaran on accomplishments of endoscopic surgery. More than 200 delegates will attend the workshop, being held at Kumarakom, organisers said. For details contact 9847243434
