THRISSUR, SEPT. 14. The renowned mural artist, K.K. Warrier, has been selected for the prestigious Lalithakala Puraskaram of the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi this year while C. N. Karunakaran, artist, and M.R.D. Dathan, sculptor, have been selected for the Akademi Fellowship. Addressing a press conference here today, the Chairman of the Akademi, Kanayi Kunjiraman, and other office-bearers said the three awards carry a cash prize of Rs. 25,000, a citation and a `ponnada' each and that they would be presented at a function to be held in October. They said all the awards were being given to persons who had made valuable contributions in their respective fields. Warrier who began painting murals from Thiruvangad Sree Rama Temple at Thalassery has done murals at Guruvayur Temple, Ravipuram Temple in Ernakulam, Tanjaur South Zone Cultural Centre and at Vivekananda Kendra at Kodungallur. Karunakaran who hails from Brahmakulam, near Guruvayur, is the founder of `Chithrakoodam', Kochi, which is the first private art gallery in the State. Through his unique style, drawn from the mural tradition of Kerala, Karunakaran was able to achieve wide acclaim within the State and outside. Dathan, who has also worked in painting and architecture, has sculpted statues of prominent personalities in different media in various parts of the country.
