Khammam
By Our Staff Reporter
KHAMMAM, SEPT. 14. The Groundwater Department has banned drilling of new borewells as well as sand quarrying in 16 villages of the district. Ground water exploitation is over 100 per cent in all these villages, according to B. Haridarshan, Deputy Director of the Ground Water Department. He said 11 of the villages -- Sublaid, Berole, Tetlapadu, Solipuram, Tirumalayapalem, Rayanapalli, Mujahidpuram, Mohammadapuram, Husnabad, Bachhodu and Kokkireni -- fell in the drought-hit Tirumalayapalem mandal. Chegomma, Choutapalli and Gaigonapalli in Kusumanchi mandal and Gudimalla and Arekodu of Khammam rural mandal also figured in the list. Measures would be initiated to facilitate ground water recharging and steps taken to create awareness about the consequences of overexploitation of ground water. The provisons of the Water, Land, Tree Act would be strictly implemented in the zone.
