Bankers draw flak at review panel meet

By Our Correspondent

MAHABUBNAGAR, SEPT. 14. Bankers in the district drew flak from legislators for their alleged indifferent attitude in not extending crop loans to farmers at district review committee (DRC) meeting that was held here on Tuesday for the first time after its constitution .

The Congress MLA from Makthal, Chittem Narsi Reddy, alleged that there were several instances in his constituency where bank officials ill-treated farmers approaching them for crop loan during the current kharif season and denied them loan on some pretext or other.

The Congress MLA from Wanaparthy, G. Chinna Reddy, alleged that Andhra Bank and UCO Bank officials in his constituency were not even allowing farmers to enter their banks. He said though only one month was left for the end of kharif, farmers were not extended loans by bankers.

The Telugu Desam Party MLA, Nagam Janardhan Reddy, and the MP, Ravula Chandra Shekar Reddy, said private money lenders were denying loans to farmers following the moratorium on loans announced by the State Government. All the members who participated in the discussion expressed concern over the prevailing adverse seasonal conditions in the district and urged the chair to initiate relief measures.

Joint meeting

The district incharge Minister, G. Vinod, said a joint meeting of bankers and legislators would be held on September 16. He directed the district Collector, M. Jagadeeshwar, to conduct an enquiry into the allegations made by TDP members of sub-standard construction of Pushkaram works in the district.

Special package

Later addressing newsperson the Minister said a special package for drought-affected districts such as Mahabubnagar, Adilabad and Anatapur was in the pipeline. He said three groups with representatives of trade unions, management and the Government were on the job of formulating a welfare policy for labourers belonging to unorganised sector.
