HYDERABAD, SEPT. 14. In what was aptly described as a sheer coincidence and rare combination, the Karnataka Chief Minister, Dharam Singh, had studied in Hyderabad to become a graduate from Osmania University, while his Andhra Pradesh counterpart, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, completed his MBBS course from Gulbarga in Karnataka, the native place of Mr. Singh. "What a combination it is? We literally swapped places to pursue studies. I had to study in a medical college in Gulbarga paying Rs. 5,000 as donation, when I failed to get a merit seat here and Mr. Singh had to come to Hyderabad to complete his studies," Dr. Reddy said candidly at a function where Mr. Singh was felicitated. Responding, Mr. Singh, who spoke in chaste Urdu and recited two couplets, reminisced his student days in Hyderabad and how he used to see senior Congress leaders, G. Venkatswamy and former Chief Minister, T. Anjaiah at the INTUC office in front of YMCA, Narayanguda.
Telangana problem
He went a step further and recalled that he was president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, when Dr. Reddy headed Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee. "I am also aware of the problem of Telangana, the problem between the landless and the landlords and the naxalite issue which needs to be looked at from socio economic angle too." Mr. Venkatswamy said Mr. Singh was his neighbour in Chikkadpally and his rise to the Chief Minister's post was indeed a proud moment for all those who were in erstwhile Hyderabad State encompassing Telangana, parts of Karnataka and Maharashtra.
