Ravishankar clinches maiden crown

KOCHI, SEPT. 14. Unseeded lefthander R. Ravishankar, confusing his seeded opponents with shrewd angles, bagged his maiden under-13 boys' title at the 11th Kochi Refineries Open all-Kerala badminton tournament at the KRL auditorium here on Tuesday.

Ravishankar, a cousin of National men's doubles star Rupesh Kumar, jolted the top two seeds, No. 1 S. Pranav in the semifinals and V. H. Bharath in the final.

Siblings Dileep T. Jacob and Daya Elsa Jacob, children of former Kerala star Suresh Thomas, made merry, winning the boys' under-16 and girls' under-13 titles respectively.

The results:

Men's singles semifinals: Shankar P. Gopan (RSC) bt P. A. Alfred (RSC) 4-15, 15-1, 15-13; Quarterfinals: Antony K. Jacob bt Virgil Jacob 15-1, 15-1; Alwin Francis bt P. V. Binoy 15-7, 15-9; Gopan w/o Manohar Pai; Alfred bt Shivsankar Bodra 15-1, 15-6.

Boys: Under-19 singles semifinals: Shankar Gopan bt Vinod Shankar 15-5, 15-3; Dileep T. Jacob bt Alwin Francis 3-15, 15-7, 15-13.

Under-16 singles final: Dileep T. Jacob (RSC) bt Pradeep Jayakumar (RSC) 15-6, 15-8; Semifinals: Dileep bt Arjun M. Nair 15-11, 15-9; Pradeep bt Vinod Sankar 13-15, 15-9, 15-12.

Under-13 singles final: R. Ravishankar (RSC) bt V. H. Bharath (RSC) 15-13, 15-11; Semifinals: Ravishankar bt S. Pranav 17-16, 15-3; Bharath bt Abraham Philip 15-9, 15-8; Doubles final: Arun George/S. Pranav (RSC) bt V. H. Bharath/Sreehari Kesav (RSC) 15-9, 15-2.

Girls: Under-13 singles final: Daya Elsa Jacob (RSC) bt Tisa Paul (RSC) 11-1, 11-1; Semifinals: Daya bt Boneeta Bose 11-0, 11-1.
