Residents to plant saplings on road

By Our Staff Correspondent

Residents of Koluvalu Island in Mulki hobli staging `Kesar Rattisi Chaluvali' on Monday in protest against the poor condition of the road.

MANGALORE, SEPT. 14. The Dakshina Kannada District Badajanara Abhivriddi Samiti at Paduhitlu Haleyangadi Panchayat in Mulki hobli has threatened to plant banana saplings on the road at Koluvailu island if the authorities concerned do not respond to their request that the road be repaired at once.

The road in Koluvailu island was repaired 25 years ago. What is more appalling is that the gravel and the stones are scattered on the road, making it dangerous for road users.

To protest against this, the samiti staged a black flag demonstration when the MLA, Abhayachandra Jain, visited the area sometime ago. As there was no response from the authorities concerned, the samiti prepared an effigy of the MLA and splashed mud on it on Monday. The samiti secretary, William D'Souza, said this was not a reflection on any individual but the neglect of the road had to be brought to the notice of the people outside the island. The agitation was called "Kesar Rattisi chaluvali" (mud slinging movement). The samiti members and the local people, led by Daniel Devaraj, an advocate, performed "shramadhan" on the occasion to make the road less dangerous to pedestrians.

Mr. Devaraj said if this did not get any response, the protesters would plant plantain saplings in the middle of the road.
