Alandur municipality to sink borewells

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, SEPT. 14. The Alandur Municipality plans to sink borewells immediately following mounting pressure from residents and elected representatives protesting against irregular water supply.

An official press note stated that water drawn from these borewells would be stored in mini- overhead tanks and distributed to residents.

Series of protests

The decision follows a series of protests by residents, mostly on the eastern fringes of the municipality, complaining of poor supply as their areas were located at the tail-end of the drinking water supply scheme.

Stating that the population of the Municipality was about 1.5 lakh, officials said Alandur was among the fastest growing local bodies, next only to the Chennai Corporation.

The Municipality's daily requirement was 70 lakh litres. Since August 2002, the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board has been supplying water to the residents and the quantity dwindling following severe drought in successive years.

Despite the grim situation, the board continued to supply 20 lakh litres since September 2003.

However, of late, the supply was reduced to 10 lakh litres. Following orders from the State Government, the board increased its supply to 15 lakh litres from Monday, the Municipal officials said.

With the Metrowater providing 15 lakh litres, the total supply to the Alandur Municipality was 30 lakh litres a day, the note added.
