Five Al-Umma activists sentenced

SEPT. 14.
Five Al-Umma activists were sentenced to seven years rigorous imprisonment for stabbing K. Maideen Pitchai (26), an eatery worker.
According to prosecution, Tailor Siddique (40), Rasool alias Bathi Rasool (20), Koththanaar Ali (27), Kozhikkadai Aliyar (26) and Shahul Hameed (27), all hailing from Melapalayam, collected money for their organisation.
When Mr. Pitchai, a parotta stall assistant of Aminpuram under the Melapalayam police station limits refused, the activists threatened him of dire consequences.
The Al-Umma activists suspected that Maideen Pitchai was keeping the police informed of their movements and stabbed him on March 25, 2002.
They were picked up by the police.
The First Assistant Sessions Judge, Ramachandran, sentenced the accused and imposed a fine of Rs. 1,000 on each of them.
