2 policemen seek bail in Jayalakshmi case

By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI, SEPT. 14. Two policemen, allegedly involved in the Jayalakshmi episode, have filed a bail petition before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court. The suspended sub-inspector, B. Shahjahan, and a head constable, R.S. Kannan, were arrested by the Maraneri police in Virudhunagar district and are now confined in the Central prison here. They were arrested on a complaint preferred by K. Alagirisamy, father of Jayalakshmi (32) of Sivakasi.

Alagirisamy alleged that four inspectors along with two other policemen kidnapped his wife, son and grandchildren and looted 20 sovereigns of jewellery and decamped with Rs. 60,000 in cash, when he was away from his house. In their petition, the two policemen said the persons, who were alleged kidnapped, gave contradictory statements about the incident. In a statement to the police, they said that they were not abducted by anybody. But the very next day they deposed before the magistrate saying policemen kidnapped them.
