Allegations baseless: BJP

NEW DELHI, SEPT. 14. Irked by the Railway Minister, Lalu Prasad's barrage of allegations against its leaders, the BJP today came down heavily on the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief and termed his accusations as ``baseless and imaginary.''

The BJP vice-president and spokesman, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, said at a press conference that Mr. Lalu Prasad had resorted to ``condemnable'' charges against the senior BJP leader, L.K. Advani, and others only to ``cover up for his sins committed in Bihar during 15 years'' of RJD rule.

He strongly denied Mr. Lalu Prasad's allegations that Mr. Advani was involved in the demolition of the disputed structure in Ayodhya.

Mr. Lalu Prasad had levelled the charge on Sunday quoting the Time magazine and Mr. Naqvi circulated copies of the news item and claimed that there was no such mention in the report.

He also dismissed allegations that Mr. Advani had been accused of conspiracy to assassinate Mohammad Ali Jinnah and that Pakistan had declared him ``absconder''.

Mr. Naqvi circulated a news report of March 6, 2002 quoting the then Pakistani High Commissioner to India, Jehangir Ashraf Qazi, in which ``he had denied any such case.''

``For several days, Prasad has been levelling imaginary, baseless and fake allegations against the BJP and NDA leaders. Everyday, he is levelling a fake allegation to create confusion,'' Mr. Naqvi alleged.

``People usually do not take Prasad seriously but he has launched a sustained campaign to create confusion to divert attention from his misdeeds,'' Mr. Naqvi said, adding that this had necessitated issuance of rejoinder by his party. — PTI
