Make health care affordable for poor: Barnala

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, SEPT. 14. The four-month-long golden jubilee celebrations of Gandhi Medical College (GMC) got off to a spirited start on Tuesday, with the Governor, Surjit Singh Barnala, calling for efforts to get the best out of the resources that had been invested over the last five and a half decades in medical and health care in the State.

Three vital factors

Addressing hundreds of alumni, former Principals, Superintendents along with the current fraternity of GMC at the college auditorium, Mr. Barnala said quality of medical service, the care with which patients were attended to and post surgery care were matters that required greatest attention.

Apart from an increased impetus for provision of medical and health care facilities in rural areas, Mr. Barnala said there was a need to rethink the modalities regarding health care in rural and tribal areas where problems were acute, particularly because health professionals at various levels wanted to operate only from urban areas or from easily accessible roadside villages.

He also called upon contemporary students of GMC to serve the poorest of the poor by providing medical aid at affordable cost and to hold the institution's flag high, as the alumni of the institution had done all these years.

Principal's appeal

The GMC Principal, G. Kishore Roy, who said the institution was one of the best in South Asian countries, also thanked the Alumni Association for its contributions, apart from appealing to it for help in setting up a general-purpose playground and additional floor for the boys' hostel.

The president of the GMC Alumni Association, D. Raja Reddy, said the educational centre to be constructed by the association would offer regular courses in advanced cardiac life support and advanced trauma life support apart from helping the faculty update its knowledge.

Book released

The Governor later released a book, `The History of Gandhi Medical College and Gandhi Hospital', authored by Dr. Raja Reddy.

The former Principals and Superintendents of GMC and Gandhi Hospital were honoured on the occasion while students presented cultural programmes.

The Vice-Chancellor of NTR University of Health Sciences, R. Sambasiva Rao, the Director of Medical Education, K. Bhaskar Rao, and the GMC vice-Principal, Pradeep Deshpande, spoke.
