An apology for bus stand Sir, __ The report, `Does it stand a chance of clean environment' (Sept. 13) effectively reflects the poor state of the Mattuthavani Integrated Bus Stand. The officials responsible for the maintenance of the bus stand continue to be indifferent. This bus stand, constructed at a high cost, opened with a lot of fanfare and touted as a landmark, has become an eyesore and a haven for anti-social elements. The garbage and stench pervading the entire area, the proliferation of unauthorised shops, eateries and vehicles moving here and there without any sign of anybody controlling it speak volumes for the negligence on the part of the officials. It is a picture of what a bus stand ought not to be. At least henceforth, proper steps should be taken to maintain the bus stand clean. The police and voluntary agencies could be involved in this endeavour. D. Samuel Lawrence, Madurai. Beggars' menace Sir, When I visited the `uzhavar sandai' at Anna Nagar recently, I was shocked to see an elephant being made to beg. On certain occasions, beggars are also found roaming about in the market. Officials should do something. P. Habeeb Rahman, Madurai. Bad road Sir, Viswanathapuram Colony limits appears to be a neglected area. The main road was dug for underground drainage five months ago. But, they are yet to be closed. The awful condition of the road is causing inconvenience to the residents. Will the authorities concerned do the needful? S.L. Simeon, Madurai. Poor English Sir, The poorly drafted writ petition filed in the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court laid bare the lawyer's weak point. It ran, "... ... ... under Act 226 of contribution of India". (Sept. 6). A layman engages an advocate because he can not grasp the nuances of legal jargons. If the advocate happens to be incoherent, his client will lose his case. Obviously, this state-of-affairs is the result of a fall in the standard of teaching English in our educational institutions in the past few decades. It is high time we focussed on upgrading the skills in the use of English, as it is an international language. V. Krishnamoorthy, Madurai. II
Sir, Madurai once boasted of lawyers such as Achalu Iyengar, Kalayanasundaram Aiyer and K. Lakshmi Narasimhan whose command of English was exemplary. They were well versed in the nuances of the language and the intricacies of laws. The modern day lawyers should try to equip themselves with these qualities. V.S. Sankaran, Madurai. Medians Sir, Temporary medians are erected on roads by placing diesel drums with sands in most of the places of the city, and to some extent, they help to streamline vehicular traffic. But at the same time, they pose a risk to the drivers at night, as the drums have not been fitted with effective illuminators. The traffic police must do something to ensure the safety of road-users. The Corporation engages sweepers to clear the roads of sand. Since they work amid heavy vehicular traffic, they should be given a coloured scarf, so that drivers could identify them. K. Chandran, Madurai. Railway revenue Sir, Instead of reducing the journey time by cancelling halts at several important stations, the railways should ensure punctuality of trains, reduce fares and doubling the lines. These measures will help the railway earn more revenue. S. Vellaichamy, Tirumangalam. Sub-Registrar office's woes Sir, The functioning of the Sub-Registrar offices in Kanyakumari district leaves much to be desired. The employees do not discharge their duties properly. Even application forms for getting encumbrance certificates are not available at the Edalakuddy office, and the applicants are asked to buy them from document writers. The applicants are forced to seek the services of document writers for filling up the forms, paying a hefty sum. The paper works relating to land deals and money transactions are routed through the document writers. I hope the authorities concerned will look into this. P. Raj Pravin, Nagercoil. Parking lots needed Sir, This is with reference to the report on facilities in Palani temple (Sept. 4), I commend the authorities for their decision to provide more amenities at the temple. I also request that two-wheeler parking lots be set up either near the winch station or the rope car station. M. Shalini, Palani. Sodium vapour lamps Sir, Thefts occur mostly in residential areas such as Lakshmipuram and Nethaji Nagar located on the outskirts of Palani. The streetlights installed there are insufficient. Hence, I request the authorities concerned to provide sodium vapour lamps. R.S. Nivetha, Palani. Entrance tests Sir, The views of Dr. K. Venkata Subramaniam, former member, Union Planning Commission, on the entrance examinations for professional courses are laudable. The examinations often serve as a hindrance for students of the weaker sections. What is the use of such examinations when the authorities concerned could not set an error-free key for evaluation? Hence, the entrance examinations should be stopped forthwith, and the Government should introduce reservation for rural students. P. Gnana Pandithan, Kilavikulam. Train services Sir, Kudos to the Southern Railways for launching a super-fast train between Chennai Egmore and Tenkasi. It will be a boon to those visiting Courtallam Falls and Sabarimala. As this train will be a weekly service, the railway can extend the Madurai-Rajapalayam train to Tenkasi as a daily service. If additional engines and coaches are available, passenger trains can be run between Madurai and Rajapalayam thrice a day. It will be a relief to bus passengers who have to spend Rs.8.50 more. A. Subramanian, Rajapalayam Sethu project Sir, Political parties are vying with one another to take credit for the Sethusamudram project. P. Muthiah Pillai of the Congress was elected to Parliament from Tirunelveli in 1962. He was the brain behind the Tuticorin harbour and the rail line between Nagercoil and Tirunelveli. Yet, the Congress did not any credit for these projects. G. Purushothaman, Tirunelveli. No ATM facility Sir, Many tourists visit the Thanumalayan temple at Suchindram. Yet, there is no Automated Teller Machine in the town. There is a branch of the State Bank of Travancore. I request the State Bank to provide an ATM at Suchindrum. M.V. Nagadevan, Suchindrum. Mobile phone service Sir, In order to extend the mobile service in the Karaikudi circle, the BSNL announced a new network of cellular towers would be set up at Pallathur, where the Chettinad exchange is located. It is a boon to the mobile users of Karikudi and other villages. But, no work has been done, except the concretisation of the basement area for the proposed tower. I request the BSNL to expedite the work. Further, there is a waiting list for landline connections at Chettinad, Kanadukathan, Nemathanpatti, Pallathur and Kothamangalam. I hope the BSNL will do the needful. C.A.C. Murugappan, Kothamangalam.
