Temperature

MADURAI, SEPT. 14. The city today registered a maximum temperature of 34.3 degree Celsius and a minimum of 24.1 degree Celsius. The Madurai airport received 7.5 mm of rainfall till 8.30 a.m.

Water level

The level in Periyar dam stood at 115.1 feet, with an inflow of 313 cusecs and a discharge of 725 cusecs. The level in Vaigai dam was 35.53 feet, with an inflow of 281 cusecs and a discharge of 30 cusecs. The combined Periyar storage was 2, 303 mcft.

Kuppanampatti registered a rainfall of 55 mm followed by Peranai — 33.4, Thaniyamanglam — 32.2, Melur — 18, Madurai — 12.8, Mettupatti — 9.4, Pulipatti — 8, Viraganur and Kallandiri — 6 mm each, Veerapandi — 4, Idayapatti — 3, Vaigai dam — 2.5, Andipatti — 2.3, Manjalar dam — 2 and Sathayar dam — 1 mm.

Commit suicide

A schoolgirl and her boyfriend committed suicide, after their families objected to their marriage.

The police said C. Mangayarkarasi, 18, a Plus-Two student of a city school, residing at Karuppayoorani, fell in love with R. Bhaskaran, 23, of the same area, a few years ago. Despite resistance from their parents, they continued the affair and planned to marry.

Meanwhile, Mangayarkarasi's parents arranged for her marriage on September 16. Pained by the sudden development, they consumed poison after school hours on Monday. They were rushed to the Government Rajaji Hospital, where they died this morning.

The Karuppayoorani police have registered a case.

Human chain

Cadres of the urban district unit of the Tamil Nadu Congress Human Rights Wing formed a human chain here today, to protest the Bharatiya Janata Party's bid to stall the proceedings of Parliament.
