THIRUVANANTHAPURAM. Sept. 14. The clogging of sewerage lines in Jagathy has resulted in an overflow of sewage into dozens of houses in the area. The worst affected are the houses in the Mudippura Road, Panayil Lane and in the CS Lane. Several persons in the area have reportedly been taken ill because of the sewage-logging which began about three months ago. Many years ago, officials of the Kerala Water Authority had cut open the clogged sewerage lines in the area to facilitate overflow of sewage into the open drains by the side of the road. When these drains were blocked at several places, the sewage started flowing on to the road and into the houses.
Quantum jump
Things got much worse during the latest round of rains, with the area experiencing a quantum jump in the amount of sewage flowing on to the road and into the houses. In some houses, the courtyards are still filled knee-deep with sewage. Repeated complaints by the local people to the KWA elicited no response from the officials. According to KWA Superintending Engineering, K. Mohanan, all sewerage lines in the Jagathy area are so clogged that the only remedy is to connect them to the parallel intercepting sewer being laid from Vellayambalam to Kuriathy. " We are almost through with interconnecting the lines passing through Jagathy with the new intercepting sewer. Once this is done, the sewage overflow in this area will be eliminated," he said. Meanwhile, the local people, along with BJP activists, organised a hartal at Jagathy today to protest against the tardiness with which the sewage problem is being addressed by the KWA.
