NEW DELHI, SEPT. 14. Describing those contributing to the spread of the climate of violence, retaliation and brutality in the name of Islam as its worst enemies, eminent jurist, L.M. Singhvi, today said those who belittle and deride Islam are often ignorant of its unique contribution to human history. "Many detractors of Islam who talk only of the so-called Islamic fundamentalism and terrorism, ignore the contributions of the people of Islamic faith to art, architecture, trade, commerce, literature, philosophy, science, education and the sense of universal human fraternity. The time has come for a new resurgence and revival in the countries of Islam on the basis of their great heritage,'' Dr. Singhvi said, while delivering the fifth Hakeem Abdul Hameed Memorial Lecture on "Islamic Heritage in the contemporary dialogue among civilizations'' at Jamia Hamdard today. While pointing out that a few self appointed fanatics and terrorists claiming to speak or act in the name of Islam cannot be taken to represent its message and heritage, Dr. Singhvi noted that "the world owes Islam greater and deeper understanding and a just and fair solutions of the problems which Islamic nations and people face today. The world has no right to impose its values and lifestyles on the Islamic people, nor can Islam and Muslims legitimately resist the onward march of democracy, human rights and the rights of the multi-cultural civil society.'' Urging Muslims across the world to unite against all forms and manifestations of terrorism, Dr. Singhvi said by doing so, they would lose nothing but the taint of terrorism. "Muslims must work unitedly, single mindedly, categorically and without any mental cobwebs and rationalisation to outlaw terrorism and punish terrorists.''
