SINGAPORE: Malaysia's Federal Court in Putrajaya on Wednesday unanimously upheld the conviction of the former Deputy Prime Minister, Anwar Ibrahim, in the corruption case. With the apex court's dismissal of Mr. Anwar's "review applications," the mandatory ban on his re-entry into the arena of active politics will hold until 2008. Mr. Anwar, who is currently in Germany for medical treatment, was set free from prison on Sept. 2, when the Federal Court upheld his appeal against his conviction and sentence on a case relating to alleged `sodomy'. The mandatory ban on participation in active politics applies to those convicted and sentenced to imprisonment for a specified period or more.
