`Ankurarpanam' a prelude to mega event

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUMALA, SEPT. 15. Grandeur marked the `Ankurarpanam' festival being observed in connection with the nine-day annual Brahmotsavams of Lord Venkateswara, slated to begin from Thursday.

The commander-in-chief of the Lord's domain, Lord Viswaksena, was taken around the mada streets, encircling the hill temple, in a grand procession as part of the Ankurarpanam festival, which is performed as a prelude to the commencement of the mega event.

It is believed that Lord Viswaksena goes round the temple complex supervising the arrangements being made for the conduct of Brahmotsavams. The annual festival starts only after getting the approval of the army chief.

Sacred earth

In his way, he also collected the `sacred earth' at Vasantha mandapam required for the `yagasala' located inside the temple complex -- where homam is organised on all the days of the festival.

In connection with the Ankurarpanam `Navadhanyams' were sown in sacred earthen pots at the yagasala for germination.

Earlier, special rituals like Ekantha Thirumanjanam to senadhipathi and other parivara deities, koluvu and panchanga sravanam were conducted at Bangaru vakili inside the temple.

Some rituals cancelled

The TDP today cancelled certain rituals like Vasanthotsavams and S.D. Seva in connection with the `Ankurarpanam'.
