WARANGAL, SEPT. 15. A former extremist, Bhanotu Raju alias Sambaiah, who was alleged to be police covert, contradicted his own statements here today and said he was coerced by the People's War to talk against the Warangal police. Raju was freed by the PW and reached his village Sultanpur of Chityal mandal late last night. He was summoned by the Superintendent of Police, Kothakota Srinivasa Reddy, to verify the truth in his statements made in the forest in the presence of the PW Khammam and Warangal division committee secretary, Yadanna.
`Threatened by PW'
Speaking to newsmen here, Raju said he was threatened by the PW and was asked to issue statement against the SP and the police. He said he never met the SP earlier, but was forced to state that SP offered him Rs. 2 lakhs to kill Yadanna. Raju further said he came out of the quad two days before the Oddugudem incident and knew nothing about the incident or the coverts. He said he was surprised to find the PW suspecting his role in the incident branding him as police covert. The SP said Raju was forced to tell lies in the presence of media recently. There was no need for the police to use coverts, particularly in the present context when the Government was in favour of peace talks. "We do not know what the naxalites want in the name of talks. But, the Government wants peace,'' he pointed out.
Deadly war: SP
The SP explained that it was common for the police to infiltrate the PW and extremists too infiltrated the police. "It is a deadly war. We will take all precautions and will have our own informer network. We will also use coverts if talks fail. There are instances where extremists knew the movement of our special squads,'' he said. Mr. Reddy observed that it was high time the PW pondered over its leadership. He said that there were differences among the leaders over certain issues.
