Tiny hands shape eco-friendly ganeshas

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, SEPT. 15. In an attempt to sell the concept of eco-friendly, colourless clay Ganesh idols to their elders, over 2,000 students from 110 schools in the twin cities participated in workshops conducted by the National Green Corps on Wednesday.

The workshops, conducted at Fern High School, Saidabad, the Government High Schools at Erramanzil and Bandlaguda, Kendriya Vidyalaya, Picket, and the V.D.P. High School, Bahadurpura, had students and teachers being guided by project officers and NGC volunteers to make Ganesh idols with clay.

The works that emerged were of various shapes, including three-headed Ganeshas and serpent-headed Ganeshas. Raw material like small stones, flowers, leaves, shells and bits of glass were used to decorate the idols, which were moulded into shape after the children kneaded the clay into soft dough. About 200 bags of clay were used by the schools to make around 20,000 idols. Some schools have decided to continue the campaign through exhibitions and rallies.

NGC programmes

The NGC is planning similar orientation programmes on Thursday at Indo English School, Santoshnagar, Government Girls' High School, Musheerabad, Madapati Hanumantha Rao Girls' High School, Narayanguda, and Government High School at Hill Street, Secunderabad.

Clay is being made available at St. Pious Girls' High School, Ramnagar, Indian High School, Neredmet, St. Ann's High School, Secunderabad, Mahbub College High School, Secunderabad, St. Andrew's High School, Bowenpally, and Sarathi High School, Habsiguda.

The campaign will conclude with a competition for children on Ganesh Chaturthi at Shilparamam on Thursday at 5 p.m. For details, call 94400 35096 or 98662 17526.
