Politics & religion

Sir, — The Chief Election Commissioner has warned that parties would attract action if religious sentiments are used for political purposes.

The mixing of religion with politics started with the very inception of parties such as the Hindu Mahasabha and the Muslim League. Their very names show they represent a particular community. If the Election Commission is really serious about de-linking religion from politics, it should derecognise these parties.

N. Kunju,
New Delhi
