Letters to the Editor
Sir, I refer to the article, "Remembering Anna" (Sept. 15). I was a student of the Anderson High School, Kancheepuram (1947-50). I used to see him on my way to school, sitting in the Kanchi magazine office, clad in a dhoti. Even after becoming Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Anna lived a simple life. He did not occupy a government bungalow, nor did he use any government furniture at home. He was rightly known as Thennattu Gandhi (South Indian Gandhi).
K. Vasu,
* * * Sir, Any memoir on Annadurai will be incomplete without a mention of the World Tamil Conference which he organised in January 1968. He gave an epoch-making speech in which he called upon Tamils to break the shackles that bound them for centuries and march ahead to a renaissance. That he never had a bank account until he became Chief Minister bears testimony to his simplicity.
Ismayil Ibrahim Liyakath,
Madurai, T.N.
