PONDICHERRY, SEPT. 15. The Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, today urged officials to speed up implementation of schemes for the Scheduled Castes in the Union Territory. Mr. Rangasamy, who reviewed the progress of welfare schemes for the Scheduled Castes (SC) in Pondicherry, said the Administration was giving priority to these schemes; details relating to the availability of basic facilities were also being compiled. He said that funds earmarked under the under Special Component Plan (SCP) should be fully utilised before the end of the current financial year (2004-2005).
First meeting
This was the first meeting held for review of the implementation and the pace of progress of schemes for the Scheduled Castes. The Health Minister, E. Valsaraj, the Local Administration Minister, A. Elumalai, the government whip P. Rajavelu, the MLAs N. Gangadharan and P. Angalan, the Development Commissioner B.V. Selvaraj and Finance Secretary M. Sathiavathy attended the meeting. A press release from the Director of Planning and Research Department, M. Sreedharan, said the Union Territory administration had earmarked Rs 74.85 crores under the SCP for welfare schemes for the Scheduled Castes. This worked out to 16.23 percent of the approved outlay of Rs. 461 crores for the annual plan for 2004-2005. The plan focuses on education, development of infrastructure and provision of basic amenities. Subsidies for construction of houses for the poor and distribution of free saris and dhotis were also part of the welfare measures.
