UDHAGAMANDALAM, SEPT. 15. Elaborate arrangements were under way for the 2004 Autumn Festival here. Stating this to newspersons here today, the Nilgiris Collector, K.S. Muthuswaamy, said that it would be held from September 25 to October 3. While dance, drama and music programmes would be organised during the festival, to be conducted at the Ooty Boat House, a jamboree would be organised to mark the International Tourism Day on September 27. It was also proposed to showcase the rich culture of this hill station that has for long been known for its cosmopolitan character. Participants at the jamboree, which would cover the stretch of this town extending from the Government Botanical Garden to the main bus stand, would be tribals, badagas, representatives of various communities, Tibetans and school students.
Traditional welcome
A traditional welcome would be given to tourists who arrived by the Nilgiris Mountain Railway. Pointing out that the State Tourism Minister, A. Miller, would inaugurate the festival on September 25, he said that the same day additional boat house constructed at the Ooty Lake at Rs. 30 lakhs would be declared open by Mr. Miller. He said that Rs. five lakhs had been earmarked for the festival. While the town would be given a facelift, patch works would be carried out on the Mettupalayam-Ooty and Ooty-Gudalur Highways. Roadside gardens would be illuminated with the help of corporate houses.
Boat races
On October 3, boat races would be held at the lake and a food festival would be organised at Charing Cross with the help of the Nilgiris Hotel and Restaurant Association. Special package tours would be organised to scenic spots. Between October 10 and 21, a trekking expedition would be organised to Parsons Valley, Pandiyar, Mukurthi etc by the Youth Hostels Association of India.
