JAIPUR, SEPT. 15. Farmers, cooperatives and corporates would be brought together at a rural expo, titled "Rural Mercatus 2004'', being held here for four days from tomorrow. The expo, in which farmers of 60 villages from the districts of Jaipur, Tonk and Ajmer are expected to participate is to facilitate the farming community with the challenges as well as the prospects of the farm sector in the changed global scenario. "The changed economic situation and the new global order have opened up immense opportunities as well as challenges for those in agri-business. There is an urgent need to introspect on the pros and cons of the changes and equip ourselves accordingly,'' Thomas Cangan, president of the Society of Indian Institute of Rural Management, the organizers of the agri expo, said. The Department of Agriculture, Rajasthan is a partner to the expo. The expo would provide a chance to all concerned to exhibit, display and showcase their products and services. Leading manufacturers, L&T Johndere Ltd., Escorts, Mahindra and Mahindra, International Tractors, TAFE Ltd, Eicher and Sonalika, are participating in the fair. The credit cooperatives like KRIBHCO and IFFCO, financial institutions such as ICICI, Cholamandalam and Bank of Rajasthan would be there to apprise on the latest in farm credit to farmers, Dr.Cangan said. There would be also manufacturers of cement, fertilizer and pesticide at the venue. A cattle fair, camel race, bullock cart race and other forms of rural entertainment have been incorporated in the expo which would be thrown open by Prabhu Lal Saini, the Rajasthan Minister for Agriculture.
