CHANDIGARH, SEPT 15. The Punjab Government has agreed to release Rs. 1.80 crore for purchase of land to construct "Chowksi Bhawan'' at Mohali, the Chief Director of Punjab's Vigilance Bureau, A.P. Pandey, has said. According to an official release, the announcement was made after the Chief Secretary, Jai Singh Gill's recent meeting with the Vigilance Officers where all important cases under investigation were reviewed along with a discussion on the problems faced by the Bureau. The statement said that Chief Secretary has assured to order the release of Rs. 1.80 crore for purchase of a two acres plot to set up "Chowksi Bhawan'' at Mohali, a satellite of Chandigarh. The Bhawan would be the Headquarters of the Vigilance Bureau which has no building of its own and is operating from three rented buildings. The Vigilance Chief further said that Chief Secretary has agreed to take up the issue of release of modernisation grant with the Finance Department for purchase of modern gadgets required for investigation. Mr Pandey said that the Bureau had put its best efforts to eradicate corruption among public servants and others. Giving details, he added that in the month of July, 2004, six gazetted ffficers (GOs), and 33 Non-gazetted officers (NGOs) were arrested in 34 bribery cases while another eight criminal cases had been registered in which two GOs', 11 NGOs' and five civilians' involvement is suspected. Mr. Pandey further added that special courts had convicted eight NGOs and one civilian in nine vigilance cases during this month. He also presided over a State- level crime meeting of officers from all the six Vigilance Ranges along with Economic Offences wing (EOW), and Flying Squads (FS). He directed the officers to expeditiously probe all the pending complaints and Vigilance Enquiries (VEs) within a stipulated time keeping transparency and fairness in the forefront.
