Focus on Congress States, Sonia told

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, SEPT. 15. The Janata Party president, Subramanian Swamy, today asked the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, not to try to "misuse authority of the Government to harass" Opposition-ruled States.

Referring to Ms. Gandhi's attack on the Mulayam Singh Government for "failure to maintain law and order" in Uttar Pradesh, he said she should concentrate on the Congress-ruled States, instead.

"If the Congress party is serious about making a case for failure of law and order in the State of Uttar Pradesh, it should ask its Home Ministry to come out with a white paper on all extraordinary incidents of breakdown of law and order in the State and the Centre's correspondence with the State, if any, on the subject," he said in a statement.

Describing Ms. Gandhi's charge as "bogus and without substance", he said "it arises out of pique because Mr. Mulayam Singh is refusing to be her rubber stamp." Such "partisan politics" will backfire on her, he added.
