Bypolls: no nomination

filed on first day

Hyderabad: No nomination was filed for Siddipet and Asifnagar Assembly by-elections on the first day. The by-elections are being held following resignation by the TRS president, K. Chandrasekhar Rao, from Siddipet and D. Nagender from Asifnagar.

The Siddipet RDO and the Additional Commissioner (works), Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad, have been appointed returning officers for the two constituencies respectively. In view of the polls, the electoral rolls have been frozen in these two constituencies. The summary of revision, now under way in the State, does not apply to these constituencies.

Lalu, Rabri to visit State

HYDERABAD: The Union Minister for Railways, Lalu Prasad, and his wife, the Bihar Chief Minister, Rabri Devi, will visit the State on Thursday and Friday. They will participate in official programmes in Chittoor and Nellore districts.

On Thursday, Mr. Lalu Prasad will lay the foundation stone for a station building at Tirupati (South) and doubling and electrification of the Tirupati - Renigunta section. He will also inaugurate the Renigunta - Nandalur electrified section and flag off a diesel multiple unit (DMU) service between Tirupati and Katpadi.

At Srikalahasti and Venkatagiri, he will open remodelled station buildings. At Gudur, he will lay the stone for a road over bridge and also inaugurate the double line and the electrified Gudur - Renigunta section.

Exam fee last date extended

HYDERABAD: The State Government has extended the last date for payment of examination fee for the first year Intermediate students appearing for IPE March 2005 up to September 20 without fine.

The Board of Intermediate Education Secretary, Shashank Goel, in a statement on Thursday said that the last date for payment of examination fee with fine of Rs. 100 was extended up to September 25. Principals of education institutions were asked to submit the nominal rolls to the Regional Inspection Officers by September 30.

Polytechnic exam postponed

HYDERABAD: The State Board of Technical Education and Training has stated that the polytechnic supplementary examinations of C-96 and C-00, to be held on September 27, has been postponed to October 3 in view of the Ganesh immersion.

Office-bearers elected

HYDERABAD: P.S. Reddy and P. Prem Kumar have been elected president and secretary-general of Andhra Pradesh Real Estate Developers' Association at its annual general body meeting.

According to a press release, following are the other office-bearers: H. Bhawar Lal Jain and Sama Ganesh Reddy (vice-presidents), M. Kondaiah (treasurer), V.V.S. Reddy, G.B.K. Rao, P.S. Rao, T. Radhakrishna and Y. Vivekananda (secretaries). Twelve have been elected executive committee members while D. Murthy Raju is made the chief coordinator.

Naxals return pistol to police

VIZIANAGARAM: Naxalites of the People's War on Wednesday returned the 9 mm pistol they snatched from A. Gowri Shankar, a constable, at Lankajodu village in Kurupam mandal on September 8, said the Superintendent of Police, Swati Lakra.

At a press conference here, she thanked mediators, including ballad singer, Gadar, and people of Lankajodu village for their help. She said the naxalites had handed over the pistol to Valasaballeru MPTC member, Tirupathi Rao, and the mahila mandali president, Chilakamma, who gave it to the Neelakantapuram police.

Elected to transport panels

HYDERABAD: Two senior officers of the State-owned Road Transport Corporation -- Executive Directors, M.V. Nagavender Rao (engineering) and I. Prabhakar Reddy (administration) -- were unanimously elected Chairpersons of the Standing Committees for Technical and Stores and for Personnel, Welfare and Sports, respectively of the Association of State Road Transport Undertakings. The elections were conducted as part of its general body meeting held in New Delhi on Tuesday.

Warm welcome to Jagan

Cuddapah: Y. Jaganmohan Reddy, son of the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, who came to Pulivendula on Wednesday on a three-day visit, was given a rousing welcome by Congress leaders and functionaries. Party functionaries from various parts of the district reached Pulivendula in vehicles and greeted Mr. Jaganmohan Reddy.

Four die in road mishap

NALGONDA: Four persons were killed and nine others injured, four of them seriously, when the Tempo Trax in which they were travelling was hit by a sand-laden lorry on the national highway at Alair in the early hours of Wednesday.

The victims, residents of Parsigutta in Secunderabad, were on their way to a village in Station Ghanpur mandal in Warangal district to attend a death ceremony of their relative, according to the police. The dead were identified as Daram Veera Swamy (3), Daram Nadipi Rosaiah (32) Marapu Ramulu (30) and Ittaboyina Suresh (28).

Five farmers end lives

CUDDAPAH: Two farmers committed suicide in Cuddapah district owing to debt-burden and crop loss on Tuesday. Nelluri Venkateswarlu (45) of S. Kothapalli in Kodur mandal set himself ablaze after dousing himself with kerosene.

Another farmer, Tanguturi Pedda Pulla Reddy (47) of Karamalavaripalle village in Mylavaram mandal ended his life by consuming pesticide in his fields. A farmer, Lambadi Hari (50) of Bollaram village in Nizamabad district, reportedly committed suicide by consuming poison last night. A farmer, V. Komuraiah (65), committed suicide by consuming pesticide near the Kondagattu temple in Karimnagar district on Thursday. At Kamalapur village in Warangal district, a farmer, V. Ramaiah, committed suicide.

MLA stages protest

WARANGAL: Mild tension prevailed near the Intejargunj police station as the Shayampet MLA, Konda Surekha, staged a sit-in, demanding the release of one of her followers on Wednesday.

According to the sources, police took into custody N. Ramesh, a MPTC member of Nachanapalli, Duggondi mandal. On coming to know of his arrest, Ms. Surekha approached the police and later staged a sit-in along with her party men.

Three held; diazepam seized

NIZAMABAD: Excise and Prohibition (Enforcement) sleuths, under the supervision of the Assistant Commissioner, M.K. Devendra Prasad, arrested three persons -- Maddula Narender, Tellagolla Hanumanth and K. Rama Goud -- and seized 8.7 quintals of raw chloral hydrate and 27 kg of diazepam at Salojipally of Tekmal mandal in Medak district.

Mr. Prasad said that the kingpin of the gang, Vithal Goud, of Muslapur village in Alladurg mandal was absconding. The value of the contraband was put at Rs. 2.5 lakhs.

Literary award

KARIMNAGAR: Kopparthi's `Vishada Mohanam', a compilation of poems, has been selected for the annual Sahithi Gauthami's Cinare literary award-2004. The award, comprising Rs. 10,000 cash, and a citation, will be given at a function in the town in the last week of this month or first week of October, according to press note.

Contests for children

ADILABAD: Competitions for school and college students in quiz, essay-writing and drawing will be organised on September 26 by the Archaeological Department as part of the World Tourism Day on September 27, according to a press note issued by the Assistant Tourism Officer, P. Ravi Kumar.

Housewife

ends life

NELLORE: Upset over a reported altercation with a group of farmers in Nedurupalli village, in connection with a row relating to the way to the fields, a housewife, Sujatha, committed suicide by consuming pesticide, on Tuesday. Her two children, who were also forcibly administered the pesticide, are fighting for life in a hospital.

TDP leader's effigy burnt

CUDDAPAH: Congress functionaries and Y.S. Jagan Youth Association members burned effigies of the Telugu Desam Party MLA of Penukonda, Paritala Ravi, in several towns of Cuddapah district, condemning his allegation that the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and his son, Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy, were behind the Anantapur killings.

Telangana Liberation Day

HYDERABAD: The BJP has announced that it would go ahead with its plan to celebrate the Telangana Liberation Day on September 17 throughout the State at the venues where the official functions on important days are held.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, the BJP State leaders, S.V. Seshagiri Rao and K. Laxman, alleged that the Congress Government was not coming forward to celebrate the event officially for fear of displeasing the MIM. Qualify for interview

HYDERABAD: Seven candidates have provisionally qualified for interview to the posts of Inspector of Boilers, based on the written examinations held on September 11. The interviews will be held on October 4.

The register numbers of those who qualified are 50100002, 50100003, 50100009, 50100010, 50100012, 50100013 and 50100015, according to an official release.

Dharna by bank staff

ANANTAPUR: Employees of various public sector banks staged a dharna in front of the SBI here on Wednesday in support of their long pending demands. The district convenor of United Forum of Bankers' Unions (UFBU), Rushyendra Babu, criticised the approach of Indian Banks Association (IBA) on the issue of revision of pay scales.
