HYDERABAD, SEPT. 15. The Union Minister and Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) president, K. Chandrasekhar Rao, today filed two sureties to facilitate recalling of a non-bailable warrant issued against him by the Fifth Metropolitan Magistrate in a cheating case. Accompanied by a large number of advocates and party followers, Mr. Rao made a personal appearance in the Nampally courts. The court hall of the Fifth Metropolitan Magistrate was packed with his lawyers and others while a large contingent of the media waited outside.
The case
The TRS chief was appearing in a case in which the petitioner, Prahlad, alleged that he had collected Rs. 10,000 each from 771 aspirants for allotting the party ticket in the elections. Thereafter, he had `surreptitiously' entered into an alliance with the Congress whereby the TRS contested only 42 seats but did not return the money (Rs. 77 lakhs) he collected from the applicants.
Orders reserved
The TRS chief had filed the two sureties as the Magistrate had issued the NBW last month for failing to appear in the case earlier. While allowing the petition for recalling the NBW, the Magistrate had made it a condition that Mr. Rao present himself in the case on September 15 and furnish sureties. The Magistrate, A. Venkateswara Reddy, adjourned the case to October 14. Counsel for Mr. Rao later filed a petition in the court to dispense with his attendance on that day but the petitioner opposed it. The Magistrate reserved orders on the applications of both sides to October 14. Counsels for Mr. Rao informed the Magistrate that the High Court had stayed proceedings in the case following his application for quashing the same. Orders of the High Court were expected anytime.
`Politically motivated'
The Union Minister later told reporters that the case against him was politically motivated to weaken the TRS leadership. A "false campaign'' was carried against him. He said TRS activists would not be demoralised despite any number of obstacles set up in the way of the Telangana movement.
