`Khurana wants to return to active politics'

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, SEPT. 15. The Rajasthan Governor, Madan Lal Khurana, wants to come back to active politics in Delhi, a senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader confirmed here today.

Apparently Mr. Khurana has met the Leader of the Opposition, L.K. Advani, the party president, Venkaiah Naidu, and some Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh leaders here. That was "about 10 to 15 days ago," the party leader said. Then he had also gone to the RSS headquarters in Jhandewalan here and later, when asked about the propriety of a Governor visiting the RSS headquarters, he had said he had gone to visit an ailing friend.

Party sources said that Mr. Khurana told the BJP leadership that he wanted to be back in active Delhi politics, but was told that "there is no vacancy here" at the moment. The party's view was that Mr. Khurana had been given a free hand during the Delhi Assembly elections here in November-December last year. After a dismal performance by the BJP and the re-election of the Sheila Dikshit Government he had been sent off to Jaipur on a gubernatorial assignment.

Recently there was a controversy surrounding some remarks he had made in connection with the alleged starvation deaths in Rajasthan. The Chief Minister, Vasundhara Raje, is said to be not too happy with Mr. Khurana's effort towards "carving a political role for the Raj Bhavan outside its official function".
