HYDERABAD, SEP. 15. The State Government on Wednesday expressed its willingness to make all arrangements for the visit of the Vice-President, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, on the day of Ganesh immersion on September 27. Responding to queries from representatives of Ganesh Utsav Samithi (GUS) at a high-level meeting here at Jubilee Hall, the Home Minister, K. Jana Reddy, said that everything would be in place during the VVIP visit. However, the Communist Party of India-Marxist Rajya Sabha member, P. Madhu, charged that some organisations were trying to politicise Ganesh festival by inviting persons holding high offices. The city Police Commissioner, R.P. Singh, appealed to the GUS office-bearers not to increase burden on the police by inviting VVIPs. "Already, we are forced to deploy 20,000 plus men and officers for bandobust arrangements. A visit by a VVIP means additional force and more security arrangements," he said. Mr. Jana Reddy, however, welcoming the invitation extended by the GUS to Mr. Shekhawat, asked organisers of the nine-day long festival and immersion ceremony to inform specific date and time of the VVIP's visit well in advance so that the police would be well prepared. The Minister for Technical Education, Nayani Narasimha Reddy, said the Government would be pleased if the Vice-President chose to visit the city.
Procession at Charminar
Referring to a complaint that stoppage of procession at Charminar for a couple of hours was giving scope for spread of rumours leading to communal tension on the day of immersion, the Home Minister asked the police to ensure that the procession passed Charminar before 1 p.m. "Otherwise, you can stop the procession from 12.45 p.m. to 1.30 p.m. without creating any confusion," he suggested to the police. He turned down the samithi's request for free power supply to pandals. He, however, said the request would be taken to the notice of the Chief Minister. The Mayor, T. Krishna Reddy, announced that various civic works costing Rs. 75 lakhs were undertaken for the festival. The Minister for Information and Public Relations, Mohd. Ali Shabbir, the MCH Commissioner, senior IAS and IPS officials and MLAs from the city were present.
