Diebold's India plans

By Shanthi Kannan

CHENNAI, SEPT. 16. Diebold Systems, a wholly owned subsidiary of the $2.1 billion Ohio-based Diebold Inc, has chosen to adopt a segmentised approach for the Indian market. It is proposing to bring in an array of products and services that will serve distinct customer groups based on their needs.

Diebold Systems has introduced the Island ATM in India, a self-service delivery solution, especially designed for rugged outdoor usage. The company is now set to introduce teller assist system and a cash dispenser offering that will cater to the rural markets and serve captive audiences such as corporates.

According to Rajiv Singh, Managing Director, the Indian market has not seen a plethora of ATM products for the simple reason that the market is in its initial growth phase. However, recently the ATM market has witnessed exponential growth as the Indian banking sector has identified retail delivery channels as a key area of business.

The company has recently installed its first Island ATM for Centurion Bank in Kolkata. It is ideally suited for locations where space is at a premium and footfalls are high. It does not require an air-conditioning.Itis also ready to offer its teller assist systems in India that help bank tellers to electronically dispense cash at branches.

Mobile ATMs that have been launched in India are now taking off with several large banks such as State Bank of India, State Bank of Patiala and ICICI Bank employing these delivery solutions.

The main aim of the company is to anticipate customers' needs and offer products for relevant segments.
