VIJAYAWADA, SEPT. 16. Even as the authorities of NTR University of Health Sciences are yet to get a clear picture on the exact number of available seats for the current year, the second phase of counselling for admission into medical and dental colleges commenced on Thursday. Thanks to the improvement made in the facilities provided for aspirants and their parents at the university campus and the decrease in the number of students when compared to the first phase, the counselling that continued till late in the evening was peaceful. Being conducted for admissions into 195 seats in the medical stream and 351 seats in the dental stream in different colleges across the State, the counselling for students securing ranks up to 1,300 was completed till the reports last came in. Anxious students and parents, who started arriving at the university right from the morning, were seen patiently waiting for their turn in the tents provided by the university.
Facilities
In addition to the facilities like the help desks, canteens and tents to provide shelter to visitors from the scorching sun, the university authorities also made arrangements to display the progress of the counselling from time to time through LCD screens put up at different places on the premises. This apart, as announced earlier, the university authorities also repaid the excess fee collected from students during the first phase when the revised fee structure suggested by Justice Bayyapu Reddy committee was not put in place.
Stalemate
Meanwhile, the university authorities are pinning their hopes on the early resolution of the stalemate over more than 600 medical and about 200 dental seats in different colleges. While admissions to 113 medical and 32 dental seats earmarked for the minority quota could not be made pending judgment from the High Court, admissions to 450 medical and 180 dental seats was stopped following the Medical Council of India's decision against renewing them. "We hope that the stalemate will be resolved before the ongoing process is completed. We are in touch with the Chief Minister's Office about the issue and are expecting a result shortly," a senior official said.
