THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, SEPT. 16. A training programme for counsellors working in the area of suicide prevention is being planned by the Department of Psychiatry, Medical College, so that the counselling services can be made more effective, structured and uniform in approach.
KRISIS scheme
The programme is being organised as part of the Kerala Integrated Scheme for Intervention in Suicides (KRISIS), the State-sponsored scheme being coordinated by the Department of Psychiatry, Medical College. Announcing this here, the Head of the Psychiatry department, A. Ramachandran, said that the idea was to get together those involved in offering counselling services and to induct them into a streamlined training programme so that they could offer their services in a better and scientific manner.
Holistic approach
The training programme would concentrate on providing the latest statistics on suicides, adopting a holistic approach to suicides by exploring the psychiatric, psycho-social and medical aspects, the principles of counselling, busting myths about suicides, Dos and Don'ts for counsellors, case vignettes and early identification of suicide-proneness. Creating a network of those offering professional counselling services was also being thought of. Those interested in joining the training programme should contact the Head of the Department of Psychiatry over phone 2528454/2528271 before September 30.
