DAVANGERE, SEPT. 16. Nearly 1,000 autorickshaws were forced to stay off the roads in the city for the past few days owing to a shortage in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). This has caused problems to commuters as they have been forced to pay the exorbitant fares that some autorickshaw drivers demanded. There are 4,162 autorickshaws "officially" operating in the city, and around 1,200 of them have installed gas kits in their vehicles. However, owing to LPG scarcity in the past one and a half months, a large number of autorickshaws have not been plying. Although there are 26 city buses in Davangere, their limited frequency forces people to rely on autorickshaws.
Petrol prices
Due to the frequent increase in petrol prices in recent times, many autorickshaw drivers had fixed gas kits in their vehicles. An autorickshaw, can normally travel 250 km on a 5 kg cylinder. However, the 14-kg cylinders used for domestic purposes were also soon used in autorickshaws. As the scarcity of cylinders became imminent, autorickshaw drivers reportedly started getting their cylinders filled illegally.
Rationale questioned
The various LPG distributors say that they were keeping a strict watch on the cylinders supplied for domestic purposes. They questioned the rationale behind supplying cylinders to autorickshaws when they were having problems in maintaining supply to houses. Officials of the Department of Food and Civil Supplies said that they would initiate action against owners who had fixed gas kits in their vehicles without authorisation. When the Regional Transport Officer of Davangere was contacted, he said that he was unable to do anything about LPG shortage.
