By Our Staff Reporter
NIZAMABAD, SEPT. 16. The Commissioner of Customs and Central Excise, Hyderabad-I Commissionerate, R.J. Beley, has said that service tax payers will not be harassed under any circumstances and stressed the need for clearing the tax promptly.
`Awareness needed'
Presiding over a seminar on `Service Tax' organised by the Customs and Central Excise, Nizamabad division, here on Thursday, he called upon the Chamber of Commerce and other business associations to educate their members about the payment of tax. "The payment of tax is a social responsibility upon us as it provides revenue to the Government for spending on various social and economic heads,'' he added. He said if tax payers had any problems they could be sorted out across the table.
Voluntary compliance
The Additional Commissioner, Anpazakhan, said service tax was a very simple tax. It is a voluntary compliance. Though as many as 73 services come under tax net, as much as 75 per cent of revenue comes from telephones, insurance, cable networks and consultation firms. In Nizamabad division, comprising Adilabad and Nizamabad districts, as many as 547 services were registered, but many of them did not pay service tax, he pointed out.
Basic exemption
The Nizamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry president, Rajiv Puri, urged Central Excise officials to take the problems of tax payers to the notice of the Centre. He suggested introduction of a provision for basic exemption of up to Rs.5 lakhs.
