KARIMNAGAR, SEPT. 16. The Kathalapur police arrested a former People's War naxalite, Mekala Sayanna, on the charges of assaulting the village secretary and threatening him with dire consequences over allocation of land on Thursday. According to the Kathalapur SI, R Bheem Sharma, the former naxalite worked with the People's War for about 20 years as den keeper in the Dandakaranya region and surrendered recently. His family has naxal sympathies and his son and daughter-in-law are working as underground cadres in Nizamabad district. The former naxalite had applied to the Government seeking 12 acres of patta land as part of his rehabilitation in his native Chintakunta village in Kathalapur mandal. Revenue officials visited the village on September 1 and conducted a survey. On that day, the village secretary, Babu Rao, could not attend the survey programme due to some work. Suspecting that the village secretary had wilfully abstained from the survey programme, Sayanna caught hold of the village secretary when he visited the village on Wednesday and thrashed him and threatened him. Based on a complaint, the police registered a case under Section 353 of the IPC and arrested the former naxalite Sayanna.
