This Day That Age
President Rajendra Prasad laid the foundation stone of a six-storeyed building for the Directorate of Posts and Telegraphs in Parliament Street, New Delhi, on September 17. The capital's General Post Office will also be housed in the building on the ground floor. The building, expected to be completed in over two years, is estimated to cost nearly Rs. 50 lakhs. It will be fully air-conditioned and have the latest devices used in modern postal systems like conveyor belts for taking letters from the post boxes to the sorting counters. Quarters for essential staff will be provided on the top floor of the building and garages for cars on the basement. It will have a museum for stamps. In his speech, Dr. Rajendra Prasad called upon the Post and Telegraph Department to see that its standard of efficiency and integrity was not reduced but enhanced by expansion of the department now taking place.
