Srichaphan in semifinals

BEIJING, SEPT. 17. Sixth seed Paradorn Srichaphan powered into the semifinals of the China Open with a 6-4, 6-3 win over South Korean Lee Hyung-Taik on Friday.

The hard-hitting Thai will meet Mikhail Youzhny in the last four of the inaugural $500,000 tournament after the Russian crushed eighth seed Dominik Hrbaty of Slovakia 6-4, 6-2.

Marat Safin cruised to a 6-2, 6-4 win over America's Kevin Kim to advance to the semifinals and a step closer to his first title of the year.

The Russian will next face Jarkko Nieminen of Finland, who upset No. 3 seed David Nalbandian of Argentina, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.

Spadea moves up

At Delray Beach, top-seeded Vincent Spadea beat James Blake 6-3, 6-1 Thursday night to advance to the quarterfinals of the Millennium International Tennis Championships.

Spadea will face qualifier Hugo Armando, the surprise story of the tournament.

Also advancing to the quarterfinals were Greg Rusedski and Jeff Salzenstein.

At Bucharest (BCR Open): Second round: Filippo Volandri bt Richard Gasquet 6-2, 1-6, 6-3; Victor Hanescu bt Stefan Koubek 6-2, 6-3; Florian Mayer bt Arnaud Di Pasquale 7-6(6), 4-6, 6-3. David Ferrer bt Novak Djokovic 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
