THANJAVUR, SEPT.17 . Tamil University has sold Tamil books worth Rs.75 lakhs in the last three years, its Vice-chancellor, E. Sundaramurthy, said here today. He told presspersons that the sales indicated the increasing patronage for publications of the university. Publication of encyclopaedias and lexicons was the unique feature of the university. Started on September 15, 1981, it had so far published 325 books including 13 volumes of encyclopaedias on humanities, 13 volumes of encyclopaedias on science, three volumes of greater encyclopaedias on literature, four volumes of encyclopaedias on temples and encyclopaedias on present-day Tamil words, greater lexicon etc. The university had published seven volumes of Tamil translation of Gedger Thurston's south Indian castes and tribes, and Tamil books on medicine and engineering. New publications brought out this year were the `Dhanvantri Vaidyakummi,' which was written in manuscripts in poetic form, `Thamizhaga Ariviyal Varalaru,' which details the history of science in Tamil. It has been involved in digitising nearly 6000 Siddha medicines under National Mission Manuscripts. The State Government had given Rs.75 lakhs for publication of encyclopaedias. University Grants Commission had given fund to start a yoga centre in the philosophy department. In association with Indira Gandhi National University, it was involved in putting up an on-line project on history and culture of Tamil Nadu. The first set of 123 post-graduate students admitted in nine departments would get their degrees this year. A total of 800 students were studying in the university and doing research. The Vice-Chancellor inaugurated the book exhibition put up by the university at the Palace Complex in connection with the 23rd anniversary of the university. The exhibition will remain open till October 15 and books are sold at 50 per cent concession.
