1,000 traditional Ganapathi idols on display

An exhibition of traditional Ganapathi idols organised by the Bantara Yane Nadavara Matru Sangha in Mangalore on Friday.

MANGALORE, SEPT. 17. An exhibition showcasing over 1,000 Ganapathi idols began at the Bunts Hostel here on Friday.

The idols are from the collections of M. Mohan Alva, chairman, Alva's Education Foundation, Moodbidri. Mr. Alva has collected these traditional idols from different parts of the country.

The exhibition hosted by the Bantara Yane Nadavara Matru Sangha of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kasaragod districts would go on till September 20.

According to Mr. Alva, he has exhibited these idols for the first time. He has over 1,000 Ganapathi idols in his collection. They were collected in the last 10 years.

Recently, he purchased some idols in New Delhi. He is yet to transport them to Moodbidri.

The exhibition has idols made out of brass, wood, glass, clay, cloth, terracotta, pancha loha, other metals, "lavancha'' grass (a medicinal herb), fibre, coconut shell, coconut husk and the like.

There are idols depicting Ganapathi with 16 arms and some idols have five heads.

There are idols of Ganapathi playing the veena, mrudangam, tabla and other music instruments. Some idols show Ganapathi holding "devara dhwaja'' (umbrella). Ganapathi sitting in chariots of different kinds are on display. At the entrance is a chariot with Ganapathi as "sarathi'' (charioteer). Speaking after inaugurating the exhibition, Mr. Alva said the idols in his collections were not "modern day idols of Ganapathi''. All of them were made as per "shastra'' and all of them have the significance of "shilpa shastra'.
