This Day That Age
Three hundred troops guarded the house of General Nguyen Van Hinh, Viet Nam's Army Chief of Staff, who is defying his Government, when he addressed a press conference in Saigon on September 19. Four armoured cars were stationed outside the house. Gen. Hinh, who has refused to obey the orders of Prime Minister Ngo Dinh Diem to hand over command of the army and "take leave" in France, told reporters he had no wish to impose a military regime on Viet Nam. "We do not have that idea up to now. There are plenty of other solutions." The situation grew tense in Saigon as military trucks carried troops to city's key points while the Government strengthened the police guard on its offices.
