dated September 30, 1954: Lamas' praise for China

The Dalai Lama and the Panchen Lama, young temporal and spiritual leaders of Tibet, have told the Communist Chinese People's Congress in Peking that unity is growing between the Chinese and Tibetan people, the New China News Agency reported on September 17. The Panchen Lama, 17-year-old leading dignitary, addressing the Congress on its third day, said that since Communist Chinese troops "liberated" Tibet three years ago, the Tibetan peasants had been granted interest-free loans, irrigation schemes had been carried out and there was free medical assistance. The Panchen Lama, who ended an exile imposed 30 years ago on his predecessor when he entered Tibet under the aegis of the Chinese People's Republic in March 1952, said, "We will always rally around the Chinese Communist Party and Chairman Mao Tse-tung." The Dalai Lama (18) said the return of the Panchen Lama had "further strengthened internal unity in Tibet." The apprehensions and misgivings which the Tibet people had felt towards the Chinese had now been overcome.
