Literacy committee approves Rs. 11.85-cr. action plan

BELLARY, SEPT. 19. The District Implementation Committee for Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan unanimously approved an action plan for Rs. 11.85 crores to be implemented during 2004-05 and forward the same to the Government for its approval.

M.P. Prakash, district in-charge and Minister for Revenue, who is also the chairman of the committee, presided over the meeting held here on Friday.

`Incorporate modifications'

He instructed the officials to incorporate modifications in the action plan as suggested by the elected representatives and implement the same.

The action plan envisages construction of additional class rooms, impart training to the teachers, provide toilet and drinking water facilities, salary component, education for physically handicapped, free text books and the like.

A sum of Rs. 2.55 crores has been earmarked for the construction of 170 class rooms, Rs. 1.72 crore towards the salary of additional 239 primary school teachers, Rs. 1.16 crores towards salary of teachers sanctioned for the eighth standard, Rs. 99.42 lakhs for imparting training to the teachers, Rs. 96.45 lakhs for taking up repairs of 1,929 school buildings, construction of 14 school buildings, provide 200 toilets facilities at an estimated cost of Rs. 50 lakhs each, Rs. 42.12 lakhs for educating 3,510 physically handicapped children, Rs. 26.24 lakhs for providing free text books to 17,499 students.

A sum of Rs. 28.88 lakhs and Rs. 12.06 lakhs has been set aside as grants to 722 primary schools and 603 high schools.

A sum of Rs. 18.70 lakhs has also been allocated for providing drinking water in 187 schools.

Dissatisfaction

Mr. Prakash expressed his dissatisfaction during the review of the accounts with regard to the implementation of various activities of the scheme.

He instructed the officials to consult the elected representatives in their concerned jurisdiction and implement the scheme properly.

G. Umesh, president of the zilla panchayat; Bhagirathi Marulasiddanagowda, N. Suryanarayan Reddy, K.S.L. Swamy, B. Sriramulu, Somalingappa, all legislators; S.N. Jayaram, Deputy Commissioner; A. Manaiah, chairman, Standing Committee on Health and Education; G.S. Shivaswamy, chief executive officer, and Prahalad Achar, Deputy Director of Public Instructions, participated in the discussion.
