Census findings

Sir, — Putting aside the controversy over whether or not the population of a minority community has grown exponentially as per the recent census data, it will be better if attention is focussed on the desirability of having a small family.

Those who have planned families admit they are better off in more ways than one.

V. Krishnamoorthy,
Madurai, T.N.

Sir, — This refers to the report "BJP criticises Muslim leader's attitude to population control" (Sept. 16). The BJP says it is not communal, but what does one make of the fact that its leaders are calling the growth in the Muslim population a threat to the nation because it could make Muslims a majority.

Our concern should be the growth rate among all communities. Muslims already follow family planning norms. The problem is among the backward, uneducated classes. And this is true in all the communities.

Almas Shamim,
Port Blair
